New Home Owners: What to Unpack First
Where do you begin when unpacking your entire life? First, start with your animals! No, but seriously. Start with cleaning your new home, move on to necessities, and then finishing touches.
1. Clean,
Inspect, and Plan
·
Clean your house from top to bottom. Cleaning
the shelves, windows, and floors is easier when there aren’t books, drapes, or
rugs in the way. You want your new home to feel like your home, so clean every
place you see fit.
·
Make sure there is no damage that you were
unaware of before purchasing the home.
·
Have a game plan on what each room will look
like. Start putting large furniture where you want it to go, i.e. couches, beds, tables,
etc.
2. Unpacking
the Necessities
· Start unpacking your bedding, as long as
you have sheets, a comforter, pillows, and blinds for your windows, you are good
to go. You can unpack the rest of your bedroom at a later date.
·
Gather all your bathroom necessities such as toiletries, towels, and
rug.
·
The kitchen may take a while due to all the
silverware and pots and pans. If you’re feeling up to it, you can arrange your
whole kitchen, otherwise, pick out a couple of appliances that you might use,
and store the rest away in a cabinet for now.
·
Make sure your children and pets are taken care
of and occupied with food and treats, toys, and something comfortable to lie
on. The moving process will be a lot easier if your children and pets aren’t in
your way when you're going from room to room.
3. Final
Touches
·
After unpacking the three rooms you use each
day, the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, finish the other rooms at your own
pace.
·
There is no time limit to moving. However,
making a reminder in your calendar will help you remember to unpack.
· Soon, your home will look and feel the way you’ve always dreamed of.
Buying your first home is exciting, yet stressful at times. We hope these tips will help make the process easier for you.
