3 Design Rules That Are Acceptable to Break
Not every home has to have the traditional rooms that are
shown on HGTV. It’s okay to break the cycle of having a formal dining room,
living room, guest room, etc. Here are 3 design rules that are acceptable to break
in your home.
1.
Transform Your Formal Dining Room
·
Nowadays, kitchens have breakfast bars and
informal dining rooms right off the kitchen. People don’t see the necessity of
a formal dining room like they used to.
·
Consider using your formal dining room, living
room, or guest room as a cozy nook to watch movies, an at-home office, or a
hobby room for artwork, games, or workout area.
·
Refurnishing a room may not work for everyone,
but it may be beneficial to put a room to good use rather than keep it solely for its looks.
2.
Dark Wall Colors Crowd a Room
·
This statement isn’t necessarily true, it
depends on what furniture and paintings go along with the wall color.
·
Some people like darker walls when they are
watching TV or cozied up around a fireplace.
·
The space isn’t actually any smaller if the
walls were a lighter shade. It’s how the furniture and paintings are arranged
that make the illusion of the space feeling smaller.
3.
Too Much Furniture in a Space is Bad
·
Too much furniture is better than too little
furniture. What makes a difference is how the furniture is placed in the room.
·
The key to using a lot of furniture is having a
walkway to get around the room and to surrounding rooms.
·
Artwork and mirrors can help make a room feel
larger and not as cramped.
Changing a room back to its formality can be easy if you end up having guests over for the weekend. By having a sofa or futon in your at-home office or hobby room, you can quickly transform the room into a guest room. These 3 design rules that are acceptable to break may not apply to everyone, but can readily be available for those who are wishing to remodel their unused spaces.
